the monsters and gold

i washed up on the shore of my own self
tasted the salt in the sea
no more words on my patriot tongue
just a steady sound: my heartbeat
and all of that time
i spent on the mainland--
the music and wine,
the kiss and the feast--
it comes back to me
a long day spent gathering wood
makes a night full of light and fire
and these waves crash all around me
like a clock in this hungry hour
and all of that time

the riddles and rhymes,
the lovers and thieves--
it comes back to me
turn my head up to see the crystal and diamonds
that pierce the black of the sky
lay it down there upon a bed made of sand
let me feel the grit where i lie

a sweet melody--
it comes back to me
