the way the light hit your skin i barely recognize you and the clothes you're in hadn't been in style since some other golden age you spent the day wandering by the bohemian red roofed building and then you let it all go on that hill in the castle's shadow yeah you know you got carried away oh the years dipped in amber you were a prehistoric creature but your heart still beats away darling the look on your face it seems so obvious now: what would get replaced, what would remain i couldn't see it anyhow and through a crack in the wall you saw the light of a falling empire and in the flickering glow you found your way to the summer cinema you were a star of the screen and the stage oh the years dipped in amber you were a prehistoric creature but your heart still beats away

the lines on the map trace a steep terrain what lies ahead? yes, the road it bends it climbs and descends but the end is invisible the light through the window slants and fades away what lies behind? oh the shades of grey the hope and decay and the feeling is unshakeable we're standing still while the table breaks and the picture frames fall i can't hold back what's inside no i cannot hide it anymore the stars in the night sky strike a perfect line what lies above? how it points to me we're blind or we see but the light is indifferent break through the surface make the water part what lies below? oh the treasures of old the monsters and gold and the past is forgivable but i can't stand still while the tree buds break and the long shadows fall you can't stop time with your mind no i cannot fight that anymore

i washed up on the shore of my own self tasted the salt in the sea no more words on my patriot tongue just a steady sound: my heartbeat and all of that time i spent on the mainland-- the music and wine, the kiss and the feast-- it comes back to me a long day spent gathering wood makes a night full of light and fire and these waves crash all around me like a clock in this hungry hour and all of that time i spent on the mainland-- the riddles and rhymes, the lovers and thieves-- it comes back to me turn my head up to see the crystal and diamonds that pierce the black of the sky lay it down there upon a bed made of sand let me feel the grit where i lie and all of that time i spent on the mainland-- the hiss and the whine, a sweet melody-- it comes back to me i washed up on the shore of my own self tasted the salt in the sea but my heart is not weary it's light and it's free

i'm surfing the static and trying to find a signal the wind's at my back but my feet are stuck in the middle i'm aching for somewhere to go i'm aching for someone mistaking what's out my window for my destination and you want to have it all you told me that you want to have it all but i don't know what that means i don't know what it means for me i'm running the numbers and trying to make it make sense but it gets complicated when i i look past the present tense awake in the night and it's almost bearable that she is the constant and i i am the variable baby you just want to have it all you don't have to choose if you can have it all it's the contrast that you love the shadow helps you see the light going my way... are you going my way? and you want to have it all doesn't everybody want to have it all? in the currents that run deep it pulls me in and steals my sleep

standing there beside you where the river runs into the sea is it poetry, a fairy tale? i mix the two up when you're close to me our castle was always just sand but i had to think love deserved a second chance you can buy another ticket (oh) you can rattle through the night (on the arrow) but you can never step in the same river twice in the gambling den any fool knows the jack won't beat the ace but when you're folding your hand it's hard to give up the hope that there's another way and you watch your gold swept from the pile blame those tears on the smoke in your eyes you can buy another ticket (oh) you can rattle through the night (on the arrow) but you can never step in the same river twice all those beautiful dreams in my mind but the shape doesn't hold in blue morning light you can buy another ticket (oh) you can rattle through the night (on the arrow)

Over Here 03:17
Sometimes it seems like the grass is greener over there Sometimes it seems like the grass is greener over there I don't know if the grass is greener But I've breathed the air and it's a whole lot cleaner Over here I've been told that the sky is bluer over there Yes, I've been told that the sky is bluer over there I can't deny that the sky is bluer But true north is just a little bit truer Over here People say that the suns shines longer over there People say that the days last longer over there It may be true that the sun shines longer But the moonlight shines just that much stronger Over here I can see that the mountains are higher over there Yes, I can see that the mountains are higher over there I don't care if the mountains are higher I'll lay down low where my heart's on fire Over here With you Over here

Chances 04:35
Feather fall from a swallow's tail Knocked a train right off the rails The game is rigged so no one wins Always pay for someone else's sins Empty faith my fatal flaw Tempting fate with a lion's claw Come lay down with me tonight Upon this keg of dynamite There's a chance that it won't blow But we don't get to know I just know... Someday we're gonna have to pay You know we're gonna die someday But not today So we build this house of straw In the shadow of the old jack daw Come on put your hand in mine I'll lead you through this field of mines We'll just close our eyes and run The setting of the sun Has only just begun And we know... Someday we're gonna have to pay You know we're gonna die someday But not today As we fly below the radar And sail above the law The falling stars keep falling The albatross keeps calling Fuses lit and fingers crossed Cards are dealt and the dice are tossed Fire a shot into the dark We'll swim across this sea of sharks While bleeding from our hands But we're gonna take that chance We have to take that chance Because we know,.. Someday we're gonna have to pay Oh we won't always get away We can't go on living this way You know we're gonna die someday

The Lowlands 03:41
i'm headed for the lowlands please direct my way the train is leaving shortly there's no time for delay she told me she'd be waiting i'm not so sure she is i heard that there's another man claims that she is his lowlands was my home when i was but a child they will be my deathbed when i pass my time it started in one summer day clouds began to build we gathered the cattle that had scattered across the field and it started in to rainin and continued several days the river overflowed and the crops all went to waste lowlands was my home when i was but a child they will be my deathbed when i pass my time you know that i'm no failure but my victories are few i'm trying my best but there's too much here to do that girl i love once told me i made her feel secure it's hard to think i've been replaced nothing does endure lowlands was my home when i was but a child they will be my deathbed when i pass my time

In the wide open spaces of a tired heart There's time to turn the clock back and take it all apart You're so strange, you're so strange, you're so strange But I loved you anyway I was just seeing what I wanted to see When I saw in you something that you could never be I hope I never fall in love With anyone like her again Sign said shallow water, don't you dive in here But you know that sun was so hot and that water looked so clear I tried so hard, I tried so hard, I tried so hard But you're so cold and cynical And I stuck around anyway I found out Just how wrong i could be When i assumed that my kiss to you Meant the same s your kiss meant to me I hope I never fall in love With anyone like her again Outside the feast i was begging for crumbs There was thunder, there was lightning but the rain wouldn't come On my knees at the well with an empty tin cup I kept calling you back but you wouldn't pick up I was drifting at sea, I was searching for land I'd walk with you baby just give me your hand I stood by the fire and I prayed for the heat Oh, I'd take you dancing just give me a beat I was just living The way I thought people lived When I expected from you Something that you could never give Please stop me if I start to fall in love

Floodlights and fireworks Don't hold a candle to the spark Of sunrise in open eyes Guiding my way in the dark But long shadows fall Sad sirens call The flickering streetlight shines through The stain glass at midnight mass But the light never goes out in you Never goes out in you Costumes and card tricks They don't do nothing for me It's a mean trade A cheap charade I'd pull back the curtain if I cared On the lies that they spoke The mirrors and smoke They seem to be there but they are not We can't hide Surrounded on all sides But believe me we'll never be caught Never be caught We're gonna drown it our with a whisper Parchment and pavement Lines that connect and dissolve And lead to what we always knew You gotta split the atom If you wanna blow up the sky All the wild seas and distant centuries Strung through the eye of the needle To sew the tear and clear the air And we'll start all over again Freight trains and hurricanes That carry the world away On mad winds and engines ButI shall not be moved Long will I stay On firm feet of clay This moment frozen in time Round the bend And in the end I'll be singin your songs in my mind Your songs in my mind I'm gonna drown it out with a whisper
